Fireworks have a variety of meanings across the world, but with the overall symbol being of joy, celebration and good news. Experts believe that fireworks were unexpectedly invented over 2,000 years ago in China when bamboo thrown into fire exploded and made a loud sound. This sound was believed to ward off evil and was from that day on used for happy occasions.
Fireworks are today used for different reasons across the world including on the 4th July for the declaration of Independence of the United States.
Why do Americans celebrate the 4th of July with fireworks?
By the 1700s, pyrotechnics had already been using fireworks for hundreds of years for special occasions and celebrations. In America they were popular fixtures in thanksgiving celebrations and to mark national triumphs.
American people were given a further incentive to celebrate with fireworks in 1776 after the independence from the British Empire and following John Adams’ (leader of the American revolution) letter to his wife which read that July 4th must be celebrated with “pomp and parade, with shews, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other from this time forward forevermore”
A year later on July 4th 1777, the first formal display of fireworks was set off in Philadelphia.
