The British Firework Championship 2014 is a competition with six pyrotechnic companies around the UK uniting for an explosive showdown. It is one of the largest displays in the country with this year marking the 18th anniversary of the event. Taking place in Plymouth, it is running over Tuesday the 12th and Wednesday 13th of August.
The event was started in 1997 in order for professional pyrotechnic companies to showcase their talent. Plymouth became the favoured location purely because it was one of the places that was able to provide a safe amphitheatre where some of the larger scale pyrotechnics could be used safely. The harbour made it possible for people to view the fireworks without putting themselves at risk. The championships have slowly developed into a huge event, and it is now attracting thousands of people to the city. The event takes place, regardless of weather and obstructions. In fact even when a World War II bomb was found on the site, the event still took place!
The skies will be lit up with more than four tonnes of fireworks and the viewing platform for the audience will be spectacular. Last year, the crowned champions were Star Fireworks and their display really was an array of explosive colours lighting up the sky.
This year, the six companies that will be taking place in the competition are: Shellscape Pyrotechnics, Blitz Fireworks, Northern Lights Fireworks, Pyro 1, Reaction Fireworks and MLE Pyrotechnics. There will also be other forms of entertainment such as fairground rides and live music.
