The Chinese New year took place on February 19th, leaving the year of the horse and going into the year of the goat, also known as the year of the ram or sheep.
Through out China and other areas of the world with a large chinese population, such as Malaysia and Taiwan there was great celebrations, spectacular parades with lion and dragon dancers, lanterns in a shocking red, especially in Hong Kong where the shock red lanterns were seen throughout the city as well as their stunning firework display over the harbour, there was a 3D light show with audiovisual effects at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre and The Clock Tower.
Other major cities also had there own firework displays, with lots of use of the infamous chinese fire cracker, however this year, the chinese government has asked the citizens to avoid setting off their own private fireworks to avoid adding to chinas escalating pollution problems so there was a lot less fireworks used to celebrate this year, although some citizen still went ahead with their own private displays at home.
