The Mid Autumn Festival is celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th month in the Chinese lunar calendar.
This year the holiday lasts from 19th September till 21st September. The festival is also called the Moon Festival as the moon is normally at it’s roundest and brightest.
It originates from the time the ancient Chinese celebrated the harvest and gave their thanks to the moon by offering a sacrifice.
There are many legends connected to the Moon Festival including the one to commemorate Chang E, who flew to the Moon to protect her beloved husband after eating his elixir.
Moon Cakes are eaten during the Mid-Autumn Festival. People offer them as a sacrifice to the moon and celebrate by eating them. They are made in various flavours depending on the region. They are round and symbolize the reunion of a family. Presently they are given to members of the family and friends to wish them a long and happy life.
Next year the celebration will take place 6th – 8th September.
Chinese flying lanterns are very popular for celebrating the Moon Festival but also this year we have supplied fireworks to mark the event.
