February the 14th, Valentine’s Day has been a special day for couples around the world since the 14th century, Valentine’s Day is celebrated by giving your significant other, a gift (usually chocolates or flowers) to showing your love and gratitude for them. Valentine’s Day originates from the third century but has only really been celebrated since the 14th century.
We have Valentine’s day to celebrate St Valentine’s death on February the 14th, 239AD. St Valentine was the bishop of Terni in Italy, he was a strong believer in young couples getting married, so performed many illegal marriages to lots of young couples. These couples were not permitted to marry by their parents or because the bride or groom was a soldier or slave. As a symbol of their marriage St Valentine gave the couples flowers from his garden, flowers are the most common gift given, a dozen red roses or just one red rose. It was Charles II of Sweden, in the 18th century, who introduced the idea of flowers symbolizing emotions, and the red rose was singled out for love. The number of roses has significance too: 1 rose = love ,12 = gratitude, 25 = congratulations, 50 = unconditional love
Valentines Day expanded hugely across Europe and the U.S in the 19th century as most couples started to exchange love messages and cards, people then used valentines day cards to express their true feelings for a person in writing.
